Exploring Sex Addiction.

For healthy male and female adults, engaging in sexual activity and having sexual desires is as normal as eating, living and breathing.

However, when your sexual urges and drive leads to other parts of your life being negatively affected, you may be exhibiting symptoms of sexual addiction.

Just like drug addiction, sex addicts have a compulsive behavior towards fulfilling their sexual desires – and there is a different 'high' felt when engaging in sexual thoughts or activities. It is scientifically determined that an excessive compulsion towards sex is one form of psychological addiction, just like smoking, substance abuse, pornography addiction or alcoholism.

To have a deeper understanding of this form of psychological addiction, it is best to at least have an idea about what causes individuals to have a compulsive behavior towards sex.

Ironically, it is quite difficult to pinpoint the one main cause of sexual addiction. Experts say that it could be a build up of several conditions and circumstances which may have lead to the addiction. These conditions may range from early exposure to pornographic material, misguidance from parents, childhood abuse, sexual abuse, emotional trauma or abandonment.

The main cause of sexual addiction could be any one of these factors – or it could be a combination of several reasons.

Some people may think that sexual addiction does not have adverse affects to an individual or to his family, but the opposite is actually true.

For example, if the husband is a sex addict, the wife will feel emotionally battered – which will have negative effects on the rest of the family. This is especially true for those who do not realize that they have sexual addiction until it is too late.

All in all, sex addiction is a very real problem which needs to be addressed just like all the other forms of psychological addiction. With the proper help, treatment and guidance, a sex addict should be able to recover and resume a normal life and the sooner that the addiction is treated, the better.
